If you are thinking about becoming a computer hardware engineer, it is still a good field with an average yearly wages of $100,180 in May 2008. Despite the deep recession, most engineers still have their jobs. Even with laid offs, they can land a new job much faster than business majors. At least in this economy. Plus you will have a higher chance of getting jobs overseas.
To land a nice job, you need a college degree in engineering. College graduates with a degree in a science or
mathematics may get some jobs. But you will be much more competitive if you had a engineering degree.
However, it isn't that easy to get into an engineering school. It requires a strong background in math
and science, and courses in English, social studies, and computers. Some
schools prepare an engineer to get a job upon graduation while others
prepare an engineer for graduate school.
On top of your math skills, you also need people skill because you will be working in teams for the rest of your life. Don't think engineers work in their lab and never have to talk with anyone. That might apply to mathematicians. Source: BLS
